How to Extend the Life of Your Truck Tires

Commercial tires carry the full weight of the load, absorb every impact in the road, and build heat across thousands of miles. When maintenance gets skipped, the cost doesn’t stop at early replacement.

Tire neglect shows up as roadside breakdowns, damaged casings, lost driving time, safety violations, and higher operating costs, and by the time it’s visible, it’s usually already cost more than a new tire would have.

Extending tire life comes down to six things: inflation, alignment, tread wear, loading, vehicle condition, and driver behavior. Manage all six consistently, and tires reach their full service life instead of getting pulled early.

1. Maintain the Correct Tire Pressure

Proper inflation is the single biggest factor in commercial tire life. An underinflated tire flexes more with every rotation, building excess heat and stressing the casing from the inside out.

According to the American Trucking Associations’ Technology & Maintenance Council, a constant 20 percent underinflation reduces tire life by roughly 30 percent, and most of that damage isn’t visible during a walk-around.

Overinflation causes its own problems: less road contact and faster wear down the center of the tread. The correct pressure depends on tire size, position, load, and manufacturer spec. Check pressure cold, and use the load and inflation tables, not one number applied across every application.

2. Establish Consistent Inspection Intervals

Drivers should check tires during pre-trip and post-trip inspections. Maintenance teams should build inflation, tread, valve, wheel, and casing checks into every preventive maintenance visit, not just the ones triggered by a complaint.

Every truck needs an accurate, calibrated pressure gauge, and valve caps and stems should get checked for leaks at every stop.

Temperature alone can throw off a reading: tire pressure drops roughly 2 psi for every 10-degree drop in ambient temperature, according to NACFE, which is why seasonal checks matter as much as mileage-based ones.

Document repeated pressure loss or unusual wear. It’s often a symptom of a mechanical issue somewhere else on the truck, not a tire problem on its own.

3. Look and Feel for Tire Damage

A pressure reading alone won’t catch everything. Drivers and technicians should check the tread and sidewalls for:

•      Cuts, cracks, and punctures

•      Exposed material, bulges, or blisters

•      Embedded objects

•      Signs of tread or sidewall separation

Running a hand across the tread can catch cupping, feathering, and flat spots that a visual check alone will miss.

Under FMCSA regulations (49 CFR 393.75), a commercial vehicle can’t operate on tires with exposed ply or belt material, tread or sidewall separation, a flat or audible leak, or cuts exposing structural material. Minimum tread depth is 4/32 inch on steer tires and 2/32 inch on other positions.

Those are legal minimums, not maintenance targets. Waiting until a tire hits the legal limit means it was already running on borrowed tread for miles beforehand.

4. Correct Alignment and Balance Problems Early

Uneven tread wear is usually a symptom, not the root cause. Misalignment scrubs the tire against the road instead of letting it roll cleanly. Wheel imbalance shows up as vibration and irregular wear. Worn suspension or steering components change how the tire contacts the pavement in the first place.

Check alignment whenever irregular wear appears, after steering or suspension repairs, following a major impact, or when a driver reports pulling or vibration.

5. Match Tires Across Dual Assemblies

Tires sharing an axle should be as close as possible in size, tread design, inflation, and remaining tread depth. When dual tires have different outside diameters, the larger tire carries more of the load while the smaller one drags and scuffs against the road with every rotation.

Keep tread-depth differences between duals to no more than 2/32 inch, and match tread design across both positions on an axle.

When only one tire in a dual set needs replacing, measure the tread depth and diameter of both tires first. A new tire paired with a heavily worn one can create a damaging mismatch even when both read the same size on the sidewall.

6. Protect Tires Through Proper Loading

A tire has to be inflated for the weight it’s actually carrying, and the truck has to stay within the capacity of its tires, axles, and frame. Federal regulations prohibit operating tires above their marked load capacity and require sufficient cold inflation pressure for the load being carried.

Overloading adds stress and heat. Poor weight distribution can overload a single axle or tire position even when the truck is within its total legal weight.

Freight placement matters as much as total shipment weight. Drivers, loaders, and dispatchers all need to understand how load distribution affects each axle before the truck leaves the yard.

7. Maintain the Suspension and Wheel Ends

Tires can’t wear evenly when the components holding them up are worn, loose, or damaged. Shocks, bushings, bearings, steering components, and wheel ends are part of the tire maintenance program, not a separate system to check later.

A leaking shock, loose bearing, or damaged bushing often shows up first as an unusual tread pattern, long before it shows up as a suspension complaint.

When the same wear pattern turns up across several trucks, it’s rarely a tire problem. It usually points to an alignment procedure, a component spec, or a maintenance interval that needs a second look.

8. Train Drivers to Reduce Unnecessary Wear

Driver behavior is a tire-life factor, not a soft one. Hard acceleration, sudden braking, sharp cornering, curb strikes, and avoidable impacts all add stress to the tread and casing that no maintenance schedule can fully offset.

Training should go past “take care of the truck.” Show drivers how to check pressure correctly, recognize irregular wear, and flag damage that needs service now instead of next week.

An early report of vibration, pulling, pressure loss, or visible damage is often the difference between a scheduled repair and a roadside call, and between a casing that can still be retreaded and one that can’t.

Use Tire Data to Improve Maintenance Decisions

A strong tire program tracks more than installation and replacement dates. Record:

•      Tire brand, model, and wheel position

•      Installation mileage and removal mileage

•      Tread depth and pressure history

•      Repair history and reason for removal

That data reveals patterns by truck, application, terminal, and driver. A tire that performs well in long-haul service may wear quickly in urban delivery work. A truck that repeatedly chews through steer tires is usually telling you about an alignment problem, not a tire problem.
